If you are into the nerdy stuff…here are some fun technical facts for pavers:

The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) is the governing body for setting installation specifications in the USA. More information can be found at https://www.icpi.org But they can be slow to adapt new industry best practices. The one we have used most recently is open graded base. This was taken out of the permeable paver systems playbook. Open graded base allows water to drain freely beneath the patio system. This helps in areas with high clay content soil and frequent freeze/thaw cycles.

Techo Bloc is now testing and have installed permeable concrete as a base for pavers in vehicular traffic applications. This system gives the benefit of a permeable system but the strength of concrete under your pavers. This is a very exciting step in our hardscape industry and I am excited to be able to offer this to our clients.
